Temechi had a few things to take care of—“I shouldn’t be long,” he said, and Anat wondered if he should be skeptical—so Sogetai would take Anat back to the dormitory. He was there quickly, but not immediately; at least he hadn’t been waiting outside the door.

Anat obediently held out his arms to him. He was getting used to this, he told himself as Sogetai lifted him up.

Before he could think better of it he asked, “What becomes of Zerrina?”

Sogetai paused, as if he was surprised. As if he’d already forgotten his promise. “She ends up fine.” He made a sound between a snort and a laugh. “All through the sequels too.”

Anat must have shifted in his arms in response to that, because Sogetai went on. “She—that’s the author, I mean—after a while she couldn’t stand to have anything happen to her favorite characters anymore. Ten books in and it’s as if they’re immortal…” He shook his head, and the edge of his topknot stung Anat’s cheek. “Their children are more exciting. Anyway, I think a couple more of the series got translated. I’ll check once we get to the Falcon Descending.

For the rest, then, Anat would have to learn to read Korchin. But he had meant to do that anyway.
